Torrey Pines State Park: beachside Hiking, pristine beaches, ocean vistas

Although only five miles from our hotel, Torrey Pines State Nature Reserve is one of the most pristine, wildest stretches of land in Southern California and a wilderness oasis of San Diego County. Hike acres of winding, oceanside trails through wind-sculpted pines and beautiful wildflowers. Passing lagoons, sandstone canyons, and deep ravines, you'll experience stunning ocean vistas from the reserve's many bluffs. After hiking its upper trails, indulge in some tranquil beach time by relaxing on the reserve's quiet, unspoiled beaches.

FAQs

  • What are some scenic hiking trails in the park?

Arguably, the two most scenic hiking trails of the reserve are Guy Fleming and High Point. Guy Fleming Trial is a relatively easy, level loop that offers two scenic overlooks with panoramic views. The trail also has the most variety of wildflowers, ferns and cacti of any trail in the reserve. Although more difficult but shorter, High Point Trail, is a steep climb of trail and steps, but the top provides spectacular views of the lagoon and entire reserve.
  • Where is the best place to park and is there a fee?

While there is free parking just north of the reserve along the beach, these parking spots fill very quickly. The reserve offers two paid parking lots, both providing easy access to the reserve's beach and trails: South Beach Lot and North Beach Lot. For hourly parking rates, you must use the North Beach Lot. For all-day parking, both parking lots cost approximately $12 on weekdays and up to $15 on weekends, as prices vary depending on the season.
